What is a skin Care Routine?
A skincare routine is a range of products you use and certain steps you follow to care for your skin.
Before I share Routines that you should follow, Do you know your skin type?
Your skin might fall under the following;
Oily skin – Oily around the T-zones ( nose, chin and forehead )
Dry skin – Usually flaky or dry in some areas.
Normal skin – Neither too oily nor too dry.
Combination skin – Some parts maybe oily and the other maybe dry.
Sensitive skin – Easily irritated, showing redness.
N/B: Your body and face might have different skin types.
How to know your skin type?
• Visit a Dermatologist for a skin type test.
OR
• Do the traditional tissue test;
• Wash your face
• Tear a tissue in 4 pieces
• Put one on your forehead, nose, cheek and chin
Results;
Dry – All 4 tissues fall off almost immediately.
Normal – All 4 stick for a while and then falls off.
Oily – All 4 stick to face.
Combination – Tissue sticks to nose or chin
Sensitive – Itchy or irritated
Basic Skincare Tips;
With these you’d be on your way to a clearer and healthier skin.
1. Start with a Cleanser
As a guy, lets be real... you’ve probably slept without shower or washing your face at night, or did the rub and shine sometime.
We all have been there, but the first step to developing a healthy skincare routine and prepare the skin for all the goodness you would be showering on it, is starting your day with a face wash/cleanser and not with your normal bar soap this time, then proceed to using a body wash for the rest of your body ( avoid products that reduces the melanin in your skin ) use natural products.
A face cleanser works better at removing the dirts and unclogging pores better than the regular bar soap.
If your face happens to be on the greasy side, don’t be distressed, all you have to do is wash twice a day. Research show Men's skin is 25% thicker than Women's skin.
2. Moisturize
• Moisturizers keep your skin hydrated. A good moisturizer would dissolve quickly into your skin ( face ) and is light.
Look for products having vitamin E, Shea butter or essential oils ( natural ingredients ) as this provides hydration to your skin. Moisturizer for face is different from body moisturizing cream and its better to have both, although oils like Coconut oil and Shea butter serve as natural sunscreen.
Also look out for moisturizers with SPF above 30.
3. Keep your Beard clean
• Use a Shampoo and Conditioner specially designed to keep your beard healthy and hydrated, followed by a beard oil for shine and that silky feel.
Trim your Beard at least twice a week - Get a good beard trimmer, one with good temperature control and good for your skin and wouldn't give you bumps.
4. Eat Right
• Food is more than just a source of energy. Your diet is also crucial to your health and an important factor in how successful you are in achieving your skin goals, which in turn improve your confidence level.
Eat a healthy diet rich in iron , vitamins, protein and carbohydrates. This is a vital step for skin rejuvenation. It's okay to have a cheat diet sometimes.
5. Exfoliate
• Exofliation is removing dead skin cells from the outer layer of your skin. This allows products used above to seep into the skin, thereby improving the overal appearance of your skin.
Depending of your skin type, you should use a granular scrub ( sugar or coffee based ) or a face mask to exfoliate.
After the process repeat the moisturizer. It is advised that you exfoliate maximum twice a week, and apart from your face you can exfoliate your entire body.
6. Hydrate
• The importance of water cannot be over emphasised. Staying hydrated helps you naturally purify the system by doing away with toxins, this also contributes to a clearer skin.
In addition to drinking water, eating water based fruits like Watermelon, Cucumber and Oranges also helps keep you hydrated.
7. Exercise
• Regular exercising is a mood enhancer, boosts immunity, helps you relax and releases the happy hormone (Dopamine). Sweating during while exercising releases toxins from the skin.
Exercise also promotes anti aging and reduces wrinkles, overall... a happy mind also contributes to a clear skin.
8. Orgasm
•Orgasm causes increased blood flow to the skin, so when you climax, blood vessels throughout the body open up, helping to stimulate collagen production. For some people, this can result in what's known as the post-sex glow.
The oxytocin and Dopamine that's released with orgasm can reduce inflammation too.
9. Sleep Hour
• You need your Beauty sleep for a clear skin, it makes you feel refreshed, calms your mind, renews skin cells, gives your body the chance to recharge, eliminate the skin’s toxins and heals it from the day’s stress.
Notice that lack of sleep gives eye bags - i bet you don't want that.
• Clean sheets and pillows too help keep dirts that cause breakouts and skin irritation at bay, it's essential to keep your sheets, blankets, bed covers and pillows clean for a radiant skin.
10. Clean Apparels
• Apparels include; ties, shirts, pants, underwear, socks, scarfs, pocket square, handkerchief, and towels. Keeping all these clean helps in the journey towards achieving a healthy skin.
Dust and sweat from the previous day should stay away from your skin.
• How often do you wash your towels, underwear and other apparels?
